Prepare a passport photo by matching official dimensions and checking the crop, background and file size before you submit it.
Check the issuing authority’s rules
Passport photo dimensions and presentation requirements vary by country and can change. Find the current instructions from the authority that will receive the application. Note the required pixel dimensions or physical print size, file format, maximum bytes, crop, background and any restrictions on editing. A generic passport template cannot replace those official rules.
Choose and frame the source
Use a clear, evenly lit photo with the subject facing the required direction. A resize tool can change dimensions and crop, but it cannot correct poor lighting or make an unsuitable picture compliant. Keep the head and shoulders positioned according to the official guide. If the form asks for a plain background, ensure the source already meets that requirement rather than relying on a resize operation to remove objects.
Set dimensions and inspect the result
Enter the specified pixel width and height, preserve proportions if the frame matches the source, and use Fill only when the official crop requires it. If the form sets a KB limit, add a target and inspect the encoded output. The target may require a smaller frame, but do not reduce it below the authority’s dimensions.
Review before uploading
Check the downloaded dimensions, file type and measured size. Inspect the face and edges at full view to make sure the crop did not remove required content. Keep your unedited source separately. If a photo service or application provides a built-in validator, use it as the final check because requirements can differ between programs.
Use the official notice as the source of truth
Examples found online can become outdated. For a passport application, use only the instructions published by the issuing authority. Still is a local resizing aid; it does not certify that a photo complies with a government or travel-document standard.
Use the issuing authority's current photo guide
Passport photo rules are set by the authority receiving the application. Check its current instructions for pixel or print dimensions, background, head position, expression, crop, colour and file type. Requirements may differ between countries and application types. A generic preset from an unrelated site cannot confirm compliance, and a tool that only changes dimensions cannot make an unsuitable source photograph acceptable.
Start with a clear, recent photograph
Use a well-lit source with the face in focus and an uncluttered background that already meets the stated rule. Avoid strong shadows, reflections, filters and edits that change identifying features. Still can rotate or resize pixels, but it cannot certify lighting, identity or pose. If the authority requires a professional photo or prohibits edits, follow that rule instead of trying to correct the image in a browser tool.
Frame the image without guessing
Keep the requested crop and head size in view while changing the output. Use a proportional fit when the full source must stay visible. Use Fill only when the official guide calls for a tighter frame and inspect the crop edges carefully. A locked ratio helps prevent a stretched face. If the authority specifies physical dimensions, use its DPI guidance or pixel dimensions rather than choosing a value from a general example.
Check the final file like the portal will
Open the saved image and verify its actual width, height, extension and byte size. Look at the face at normal size and near the edges; a crop can leave too little room around the head even when the pixel count is correct. If the application shows an upload preview, review that too. The portal may apply checks that cannot be inferred from the image editor alone.
Keep the original and protect personal data
A passport portrait contains identifying information. Still processes the selected image locally and does not send it to the application tool's server. Keep the original in a private location and submit the final copy only through the official application service. Remove extra downloaded copies from a shared device when you no longer need them, and never email an identity photo to an address found in an unverified guide.
Do not use a resize tool to bypass photo rules
Some authorities require a recent photograph, an unaltered appearance or a photo captured by a specific provider. Cropping and compression should not be used to change identifying features, remove required context or conceal a source that does not meet the rules. Read the permitted-editing section of the official guide. If the instructions prohibit editing or require a certified photograph, follow that process rather than relying on a general image utility.
Use a neutral crop preview
A portrait may need space above the head and around the shoulders. After selecting the required frame, inspect every edge and compare it with the example published by the authority. Fill mode can crop the image to a frame, while Fit keeps the full picture visible but may leave unused space. Neither choice decides whether the pose or head size is compliant; the official guide describes what the final crop must show.
Do not mistake file size for photo quality
A small output may be easy to upload yet still fail because the face is too dark, out of focus or framed incorrectly. Conversely, a clear file can be rejected if its pixel dimensions are outside the allowed range. Check image content, dimensions, file type and bytes as separate conditions. A visual preview helps with framing, while the application rules and its own validator remain necessary for a final decision.
Avoid saving personal photos on shared devices
A browser download normally creates a local file and may leave it in the device's download history. Use a private device when possible, store the output in a location you control and remove temporary copies from a shared computer when finished. Still Studio does not upload the selected portrait for conversion, but the authority's application site receives it when you submit your application. Use that official destination only.
QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Frequently asked questions
What should I check first when I how to resize a passport photo online?
Prepare a passport photo by matching official dimensions and checking the crop, background and file size before you submit it.
Will changing the file size restore image detail?
No. Compression and resizing can reduce bytes or dimensions, but they cannot recover details already missing from the source.
Are image requirements the same on every website?
No. Check the current instructions from the service that will receive your file, including its format, pixel and byte limits.
Does Still upload the image while I follow this guide?
No. Still uses browser Canvas for image processing, and the source stays on your device.
