STILL IMAGE GUIDES
In this guide
Prepare a signature scan for an online form: crop empty paper, set required pixels and KB, choose a readable format and verify the export.
Make a clean source scan
Use a clear signature on a plain background and capture it in even light. Crop away extra paper while leaving a little breathing room around the strokes. A resize tool can change the frame and file size, but it cannot recover a blurry or shadowed scan.
Read the form’s exact rules
Forms may specify a signature width, height, format and maximum size. Note all of those requirements before editing. An image that satisfies the KB limit can still fail if the signature is too small, too large or saved in the wrong format.
Resize and choose a format
Keep the aspect ratio locked so the signature does not look stretched. Use PNG when transparency or crisp ink edges are needed, if the form accepts PNG. Use JPG for broad compatibility when the background is solid. Compare the preview at the size a reviewer will see.
Check the saved file
Confirm the actual pixel dimensions, output format and file size. Make sure the strokes remain distinct and the crop does not cut off a flourish. Keep a clean source image for another application if the form requests a different size.
Submit only through the intended service
A signature image can be sensitive. Still processes the file locally, but you should submit it only to the official form or service that needs it. Check the form’s current privacy and file requirements before uploading the finished image there.
Capture the signature cleanly
Use an even light source and place the paper on a plain surface. Hold the phone parallel to the page to reduce perspective distortion, then crop away unused margins while leaving a little space around the pen strokes. If the signature is blurry or shadowed, retake the source when possible. Resizing can change pixel dimensions, but it cannot restore a crisp line that the camera never recorded.
Read the field's format and size rules
Some forms accept only a particular image type and maximum byte size; others also require exact dimensions, a white background or a scan rather than a camera photo. Check the signature field separately from the portrait field because their limits may differ. Note whether transparency is allowed. A file that looks clear in your gallery can still be rejected if its extension or dimensions do not match.
Choose transparency carefully
PNG can keep transparent pixels and crisp edges when the form accepts it. JPG requires a solid colour behind the ink; use a clean white source or select the specified background before converting. A gray paper tone or dark shadow can remain visible after export. Inspect the signature on a white surface and at the final displayed size to make sure no stroke is too faint to read.
Keep the signature's proportions
A signature can become hard to recognize if it is stretched to unrelated width and height values. Keep the ratio locked unless the official instructions specify a frame with a deliberate crop. Use Fit to preserve all strokes or Fill only if trimming blank margins is safe. Leave a small margin so a flourish is not cut off, then check the output dimensions against the form's stated rules.
Verify before attaching a sensitive file
After download, confirm the file size, format and pixel dimensions, then zoom enough to check the ink edges. Keep an untouched source in a private folder and do not use repeated compressed exports as your only copy. Still processes locally, but submitting the finished signature sends it to the destination form; use the official site and review its privacy expectations before upload.
Use a scan or photograph with enough contrast
A signature image should show clear strokes against a clean background. If the paper looks gray, a phone camera may have captured shadows or uneven light; a flatbed scan can produce a more even source. Do not digitally redraw or alter the signature to force a smaller file. Retake a clean source when possible and follow the form's rules about accepted capture and editing.
Leave enough space around each stroke
Crop empty margins to reduce the frame, but keep room around the first and last pen marks. A tight crop can make a signature look cramped or cut off a flourish. Preview the image against the type of background it will sit on, then check at the displayed size. If the form's required dimensions have another ratio, do not squash the signature; verify whether it expects padding or a different crop.
Choose the simplest accepted background
A white background is widely usable for a scanned signature, while PNG transparency can help when a form explicitly supports an alpha channel. Converting a paper scan to transparency may require removing its background, which this resizing tool does not do. Do not assume a transparent output is more compliant. Match the form's requested format and inspect the edges for gray halos.
Do not lower quality until strokes disappear
A signature contains thin high-contrast lines, so aggressive lossy compression can break a smooth stroke into rough edges or remove faint ink. PNG may be a better choice if accepted, although it may need smaller dimensions to meet a strict limit. Review the output enlarged and at the ordinary form display scale. If it is unclear, improve the source scan rather than forcing a smaller number.
Save a separate file for each form
Different applications can use different size and format requirements. Keep the clean scan as your master and export named copies for each destination. Before submitting, open the actual downloaded file, verify its dimensions and bytes, and check the form's active instructions. Still Studio does not upload the selected signature, but the destination receives it when you complete that form, so use only the official service.
QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Frequently asked questions
What should I check first when I how to resize a signature image for online forms?
Prepare a signature scan for an online form: crop empty paper, set required pixels and KB, choose a readable format and verify the export.
Will changing the file size restore image detail?
No. Compression and resizing can reduce bytes or dimensions, but they cannot recover details already missing from the source.
Are image requirements the same on every website?
No. Check the current instructions from the service that will receive your file, including its format, pixel and byte limits.
Does Still upload the image while I follow this guide?
No. Still uses browser Canvas for image processing, and the source stays on your device.
